201 alloy is a high performance austenitic stainless steel that combines good mechanicals, corrosion resistance, formability, fabrication, and welding characteristics and is similar in many respects to 304 stainless steel. The substitution of Manganese for a portion of the Nickel content used in 300 series Stainless Steels can also make the use of 201 alloy more cost effective for many applications. Although a slight reduction in corrosion resistance may be a factor given 201 alloy's lower Chromium content, 201 is capable of providing corrosion resistance equivalent to 301 and 304 in most environments.
