1117 is a low carbon, high manganese, resulphurized steel with improved machinability over 1018. Case hardening is deep and uniform, supported by a tough ductile core.

Applications include parts where the combined proportion of good machining and superior case hardening are required, but where some machinability and finish (compared with 12L14) can be sacrificed.
