D-2 Tool Steel

What is D2 Tool Steel?

D2 tool steel is an air-hardening, high carbon, high chromium tool steel with extremely high wear resisting properties. It is a very deep hardening steel and will be practically free from size change after proper treatment. The high percentage of chromium gives it mild corrosion-resisting properties in the hardened condition. It has low machinability and grindability, with a medium resistance to decarburization.

D2 tool steel is also available in precision milled Super Square, which can be 2, 4, or 6 side precision milled. It is milled to customer tolerances and delivered quickly for your convenience. Alro Steel is also able to grind tool steel with a rotary grinding machine for a fast turnaround, with reciprocal grinding for an even smoother finish.

Alro Steel is a large tool steel supplier offering a wide variety of tool steels suitable for various applications. We make it easy to learn more about D2 tool steel, buy it online, and select additional services like metals processing for a seamless purchasing experience.

Alro Stocks D2 Tool Steel In The Following Shapes

  • Flat
  • Plate
  • Round
  • Square

D-2 is typically bought to meet chemistry requirements rather than physical requirements. For that reason, physical properties are generally not provided unless requested prior to production. Any material can be sent to a third party after production to be tested for physical properties.

General Characteristics of D-2 Tool Steel Include:

  • Extremely high wear resistance
  • Low machinability
