When compared with standard steel, industrial stainless plate provides enhanced protection against corrosion, rust, or staining. Stainless steel plate is available in numerous alloy grades and is typically used in applications where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required. At Alro Steel, we stock SS plate products, from the most popular and common alloys, 304 and 316 stainless steel plate to less common grades used in more specialized applications. Our stainless steel plate products can be cut-to-size based on your project’s exact specifications with standard next day delivery.

About Stainless Steel Plate

Stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French "inoxydable", is a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5% to 11% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does, but despite the name it is not fully stain-proof, most notably under low oxygen, high salinity, or poor circulation environments. It is also called corrosion-resistant steel or CRES when the alloy type and grade are not detailed, particularly in the aviation industry. There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and resistance to corrosion are required.
The primary difference between steel and stainless steel alloys is the addition of chromium. This is the element that makes stainless steel more corrosion resistant and less, but not 100%, prone to staining. AS noted above, there are a number of stainless steel alloys. Each one provides a certain level of durability and corrosion resistance but each one has differences that should be considered before making your final material selection. To be listed at stainless steel, a plate must contain at least 10.5% chromium. Some grades may also contain nickel, titanium, molybdenum, aluminum, copper, selenium, nitrogen, or phosphorus. Each of these elements creates slightly different physical properties. The two most common stainless steel plates are 304 and 316.

Comparing Stainless Steel 304 Plate to 316 Plate

Grade 304 stainless steel plate maintains a high nickel and chromium content, which provides excellent corrosion resistance. Stainless steel 304 is also nonmagnetic, has excellent formability, and is easy to fabricate, making it an excellent option for numerous types of light-duty and general-purpose applications.

316 Stainless Steel Plate

Grade 316 stainless steel plate also has a high nickel and chromium content, but the addition of molybdenum increases the corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides or chlorinated substances. These properties make grade 316 stainless steel plate an ideal choice for medical applications, marine environments, refining or chemical processing, and other highly corrosive environments.
Stainless Plate Applications
Stainless steel plate provides low maintenance, corrosion resistance solution for a broad range of industrial applications. Some of the typical uses for stainless steel include:

  • Food Processing & Handling
  • Storage Tanks
  • Heat Exchangers
  • Electrical Enclosures
  • Chemical Process Vessels
  • Conveyors
  • Architectural & Construction
  • Marine Parts & Equipment
