Carbon Steel and Aluminum Bar Grating

Metal grating is a heavy-duty product that can be used where open flooring is needed for air, light and heat transmission. Metal grates also provide a slip-resistant surface in areas that may pose slip hazards due to water, ice or other liquid hazards. Examples of places where bar grating is used include flooring, platforms and walkways in commercial, agricultural or industrial facilities, oil rigs, drainage ditch covers, stairways, and platforms. Alro Steel stocks gratings in both aluminum and carbon steel.

About Carbon Steel Bar Grating

Known for its excellent strength a load bearing capacity, carbon steel bar grating is a standard choice for many applications. Carbon steel grating is created through a forge-welding process that uses heat and pressure. This forges the bearing bars and cross rods into a single unit. The end result is a carbon steel bar grating with superior strength per pound than other bar gratings. Steel does not exhibit good corrosion resistance, so it is not ideal in applications that are exposed to corrosive elements. However, coated or galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum may be an option.

Carbon steel bar grating is available in the following profiles:
•    Plain surface, standard mesh is the most versatile and popular
•    Serrated surface, for areas requiring more slip-resistance
Both profiles are available in bare steel, shop primed (painted), or hot dip galvanized

Features and Benefits of Carbon Steel Bar Grating
•    Superior strength and weight bearing capacity
•    Available in plain or serrated profiles
•    Available in bare, painted, or galvanized

About Aluminum Bar Grating

Alro stocks aluminum bar grating in rectangular and I-Bar profiles and in either plain or serrated surfaces. Aluminum bar gratings are designed with an interlocking system that join the bearing bar and cross rods together into panels. This interlocking system creates lightweight, yet exceptionally strong rigid panels. Aluminum bar grate weighs a fraction of carbon steel grate while offering an excellent load bearing capacity.

Features and Benefits of Aluminum Bar Grating:
•    Lightweight
•    High strength
•    Rigid
•    Non-Sparking
•    Corrosion Resistant

Selecting Metal Bar Grating

Both aluminum and carbon steel bar grating offer excellent performance and value. In general, grating selection is based on load requirement, corrosion resistance, durability, and cost. In addition, the environment the product will be used in, should be considered when selecting which grating to purchase for a particular application.

Understanding Bar Grating Names

Bar grating is specified by “bearing bar spacing” followed by “cross rod spacing”. For an example, we are looking at 19-4 and 30-102. These are equivalent, but 19-4 refers to inches while 30-102 refers to mm
Imperial Measurements
Example:19-4 grating
•    19 refers to the bearing bar centers which are at 19/16” (or 1 3.16”)
•    4 refers to the cross spacing which is at 4”
Metric Measurements
Example: 30-102 grating
•    30 refers to the bearing bar centers which are at 30 mm
•    102 refers to the cross rods which are at 102 mm
