201 Stainless Steel

Alro stocks 201 Stainless Steel, a lower-cost alternative to the more conventional 304 stainless. 201 stainless steel contains approx. half of the nickel content of 304. Instead the nickel is replaced with alloy additions of manganese and nitrogen. This change also results in a higher strength stainless steel than 304. Copper is added to compensate for the increased work-hardening rate. Type 201 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel that was developed originally to conserve nickel. This alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, but becomes magnetic when cold worked.
