A36 Pickled and Oiled Angles, Flats, and Plates

Alro stocks ASTM A36 carbon hot rolled steel in a pickled and oiled (P&O) condition.  A36 is the most commonly used mild/hot-rolled steel. It is known as a mild carbon steel. A36 carbon steel’s strength, formability, and excellent welding properties make it suitable for a large variety of applications, including welding, fabricating, and bending.

What Is Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Steel?

Hot Rolled P&O as it is often called, is Carbon steel that has had the 'scale', that typically coats the steel after being formed, removed through the process of an acid bath. In order to prevent surface rust from forming after the process, the hot rolled steel is coated in an oil. The process of the acid bath is the 'pickling'.

About Hot Rolled Carbon Steel

Hot rolled carbon bars are often referred to as “SBQ” or "special bar quality," and are known for their superior mechanical properties over commodity grades of merchant bar. The products are made to specific chemistry and mechanical properties ranges, allowing them to be used in engineered applications. Resulting shafts, axles, and gears can be used in the automotive industry and agriculture equipment.

Yield strength of A-36 (36,000 psi) is less than that of cold roll C1018, thus enabling it to bend more readily than C1018. A36 carbon steel can also be galvanized to provide increased corrosion resistance.
