AISI A11 Tool Steel is a high vanadium and high carbon content steel. These additions provide A11 with exceptionally good wear resistance, toughness and strength for cold work tooling applications. A-11 Tool Steel grade falls between the oil hardening and the high carbon, high chromium (D2 tool steel) types. It is most often used to make hand tools and machine dies.
A11 Tool Steel characteristics include:
High compression strength
Very good non-deforming properties
High dimensional stability after hardening and tempering
About A11 Tool Steel
Tool steel is generally well-suited for manufacturing tools of various kinds that are used in a heat-treated state giving it increased hardness. Tool steels are manufactured under carefully controlled conditions to ensure the required quality is achieved. Overall tool steal has an improved response to heat treatment and it can easily be ground.
Other Grades of Tool Steel
In addition to A11, Tool steel is offered in a variety of other grades. Each grade provides a difference in characteristics.
A - Air Hardening
D - High carbon, high chromium
H - Hot-Working
O - Oil Hardening
S - Shock Resisting
W - Water Hardening
