It's
Good! Al Glick Named Service
Center Executive
of the Year 2000
Ever
True to the Maize and Blue
Anyone
who knows Al Glick, even slightly, knows he's a staunch supporter
of the University of Michigan and the Wolverines football program.
"That's
an understatement," he says. "I'm very proud of my relationship
with the University of Michigan. Every one of Michigan's colleges
is rated in the Top 10 in the country. With my avid love of sports,
the combination of academic and athletic excellence is inspiring.
"I
like to think that the way Alro does business reflects the tradition
of the University of Michigan, especially the football program.
It is built on doing the right thing honestly, building tradition,
developing teamwork."
Glick
is close friends with head coach Lloyd Carr. "I like his philosophy:
We don't care who scores the touchdown as long as it's Michigan.
If we win, there's enough glory for all of us. Michigan tries to
develop people working together."
The
Glick family and Alro Steel have funded endowments for two scholarships
per year at Michigan for student athletes. Several Alro Steel employees
are Michigan football alumni, but "it's not a requirement," Glick
jokes.
Several
players have worked summer jobs at Alro. Glick hopes to employ one
alumnus as an outside salesman as soon as the player finishes his
season on the Arizona Cardinals' practice squad.
Alro
also is a partner in a minority-owned joint venture with Reggie
McKenzie, a former All-American at Michigan and an All-Pro for Buffalo
and Seattle. "Reggie has a foundation in Detroit that supports inner-city
kids. He has a great name in Detroit and he's a down-to-earth, honest
person whom everyone respects."
Glick
sometimes starts training programs for employees by playing the
University of Michigan fight song. (The CD was playing in his car
as we toured the Jackson facilities.) He says he's had two customers,
also fans, play the fight song for him on his arrival at their facilities.
Dick
Dobbins, president of Caster Concepts in Albion, Mich., is a customer
and an alumnus of archrival Michigan State. "Al and I have a bet
every year that whoever loses has to fly the winning team's flag
for a week. I'm looking at the maize and blue hanging from my flagpole
this week."
