History
Al
Glick founded Alro Steel in 1948 in a small warehouse in Jackson,
Mich. Twenty years passed before the company opened a second location
in Battle Creek, Mich. In 1964, Alro purchased a local industrial
and hardware supply company and renamed it Alro Industrial Supply.
In
1971, Alro expanded into Florida with an investment in 50 percent
of Metals Service Center, Fort Lauderdale. When Alro's Florida partner
died in 1978, Alro purchased the remaining half.
In
1974, Alro built a new facility in Jackson, then expanded it two
years later.
By
the early 1980s, Alro had five locations and had enhanced the product
line to include aluminum and stainless steel bar and plate.
The
company opened a new facility in Boca Raton, Fla., in 1986, and
a year later formed a new division, Alro Plastics.
In
1994, Alro expanded its Indianapolis warehouse to become a regional
hub, and built a new service center in Grand Blanc, Mich., in 1996.
In the same year, Alro formed a joint venture with Riverside Grinding,
in Jackson, called Alro Riverside LLC.
Alro
Group has acquired 27 companies since 1983 and operates 44 metals,
industrial supplies and plastics plants in 12 states. Companies
include Alro Steel Corp., Alro Specialty Metals, Alro Metals Service
Centers, Alro Industrial Supply, Alro Plastics and Alro Riverside
LLC.
Products
Alro
Steel Corp. distributes aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel,
alloy and tool steels. Products include sheet, plate, structurals,
extruded bars, hot-rolled and cold-finished bars, pipe and tubing,
flooring and expanded metals, flat ground stock, drill rod, threaded
rod, bale ties, brass, strapping, and concrete products (flat mesh,
mesh roll and rerod).
Alro
Industrial Supply carries cutting tools, abrasives, die supplies,
and supplies for material handling, maintenance and gauging.
Alro
Plastics carries at least 70 types of engineered plastics, plus
vinyl, fiberglass, films and Teflon.
Services
Processing
services available to Alro Steel customers include aluminum circle
cutting, CNC flame cutting, plasma and high-definition plasma cutting,
production and precision sawing, laser and water-jet cutting, stress
relieving, normalizing and annealing, shearing, grinding, forming,
chamfering and machining.
