Rulon® is a family of proprietary PTFE materials engineered for high-performance self-lubricating applications. Rulon® is a member of the filled PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) family. This unique family of polymers has the ability to withstand nearly all chemicals, has low friction, and is resistant to heat. Primarily used in mechanical, electrical, and chemical applications, Rulon® withstands a variety of harsh environments such as extreme dryness, cryogenic temperatures, water, steam, and hydrocarbon fuel.
Rulon® is a proprietary family of products from Saint-Gobain. The family includes homogeneous materials mostly of PTFE based resins, engineered and developed with specific custom applications in mind. The Rulon® product line includes materials that meet today’s need for enhanced wear performance in a PTFE based material.
Rulon® Grades
Rulon® J is an all-polymeric reinforced grade. It is a dull gold colored PTFE compound that operates very well against soft mating surfaces such as 316 stainless steel, aluminum, mild steel, brass, and plastics. The unique “shaft-friendly” material is also low in friction and wear and is self-lubricating. Rulon® J has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of most reinforced PTFE materials. This makes it ideally suited for start/stop applications where stick-slip must be eliminated. The tribological (wear) properties of this material also make it suitable for both bearing and wear component applications where lubrication is not desirable or impossible.
Rulon® LR is the most popular Rulon product. Used in general bearing applications and as a linear tape bearing. Low deformation under load, excellent thermal and chemical properties. Requires 35 RC or harder for mating hardware.
Rulon® LR offers low deformation and is compatible with most hardened steel substrates and acceptable with mild steel; harder mating surfaces offer optimal performance. Offering excellent chemical resistance and capable of running unlubricated up to 10,000 PV.
