15-5 Stainless Steel

Alro stocks 15-5 Stainless Steel - a grade known for being tough and ductile with good strength. The corrosion resistance of 15-5 Stainless Steel is similar to that of stainless steel type 304. It is most often used for applications in high pressure corrosive environments and for aircraft components. Hot working with type 15-5 Stainless Steel is preferable to cold working but it does exhibit moderate formability in cold working. Stainless Steel 15-5 is a precipitation hardening martensitic stainless steel.

15-5 is a variant of the older 17-4 chromium-nickel-copper precipitation hardening stainless steel. Both alloys exhibit high strength and moderate corrosion resistance. High strength is maintained to approximately 600 degrees F. The 15-5 alloy was designed to have greater toughness than 17-4. This improved toughness is achieved by reduced delta ferrite content and control of inclusion size and shape.
