AISI M-2 Grade High Speed Tool Steel

About AISI M2

M-2 is a tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steel. It is a popular grade for cutting and non-cutting applications. Compared to M1 Tool Steel, M2 grade has a high carbon content which provides higher wear resistance for applications that need it. M2 High Speed Steel has a wider heat-treating range than most of the molybdenum high-speed steels. In addition, M2 steel has a resistance to decarburization that is characteristic of tungsten types and M2 offers an excellent combination of red hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.
M2 is available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. As with all Alro Specialty Metal products, M2 is subjected to a variety of rigid quality control tests and inspection to ensure quality, uniformity, and reliability.

More About M2 Steel

In the annealed state, M2 grade steel is considered to be a medium tool steel. The term high-speed steel comes from the ability of M2 to withstand higher temperatures without losing hardness. Therefore, it can stand up to the heat built up when higher machining speeds are used.
Other terms used to describe M2 Steel are M2 HS (for High Speed) or M2 HSS (for High Speed Steel).

Properties
M-2 is typically bought to meet chemistry requirements rather than physical requirements. For that reason, physical properties are generally not provided unless requested prior to production. Any material can be sent to a third party after production to be tested for physical properties.
Typical Uses
Typical Applications include Broaches, Boring Tools, Chasers, Cold Forming Rolls, Cold Heading Inserts, Drills, End Mills, Form Tools, Hobs, Lathe and Planer Tools, Punches, Milling Cutters, Taps, Reamers, and Saws.
