High Carbon Tool Steel

What is D2 Tool Steel?

D2 tool steel is an air-hardening, high carbon, high chromium tool steel with extremely high wear-resisting properties. It is a very deep hardening steel and will be practically free from size change after proper treatment. The high percentage of chromium gives it mild corrosion-resisting properties in the hardened condition. It has low machinability and grindability, with medium resistance to decarburization. D2 is commonly used in long production, cold work applications, high wear applications and it is very popular as a knife blade steel.

D2 tool steel is also available in precision milled Super Square, which can be 2, 4, or 6 sides precision milled. Our Super Square is milled to customer tolerances and delivered quickly for your convenience. Alro Steel is also able to grind tool steel with a rotary grinding machine for a fast turnaround, with reciprocal grinding for an even smoother finish.

Properties

D-2 is typically bought to meet chemistry requirements rather than physical requirements. For that reason, physical properties are generally not provided unless requested prior to production. Any material can be sent to a third party after production to be tested for physical properties.

General Characteristics of D-2 Tool Steel Include:

  • Extremely high wear resistance
  • Low machinability
