4140 HR Steel Properties & Chemical Composition

4140 carbon alloy grade steel plate is typically purchased to meet chemistry requirements rather than physical requirements. Therefore, physical properties are generally not provided unless requested before production. Any material can be sent to a third party after production to be tested for physical properties. 4140 HR steel chemical composition includes:

Carbon: 0.38%-0.43%
Manganese: 0.75%-1.00%
Chromium: 0.80%-1.10%
Silicon: 0.15%-0.30%
Molybdenum: 0.15%-0.25%

4140 Hot Rolled Alloy

4140 HR steel, a steel in the family of SAE steel grades, as specified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). 4140 HR is a chromium and molybdenum low-alloy steel that is extremely popular and versatile, offering high torsional stiffness and fatigue strength. These characteristics allow 4140 stainless steel plate to be used for rotating components that experience significant stress, such as axles and shafts, among other applications.

4140 HR Steel Characteristics

Often referred to as chromoloy steel, Alro stocks 4140 HR SAE steel products that contain alloying elements chromium and molybdenum. Common variant stylings include chrome-moly, CrMo, CRMO, CR-MOLY, and more. It possesses an excellent strength to weight ratio and are considerably stronger and harder than standard 1020 steel. However, it is not easily welded (4140 HR will need pre and post weld thermal treatment to avoid cold cracking). While these grades of steel do contain chromium, it is not in great enough quantities to provide the corrosion resistance found in stainless steel.

4140 Steel Benefits

HR 4140 plate provides an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and is considerably stronger and harder than standard 1020 steel but is not easily welded (pre and post-weld thermal treatment to avoid cold cracking is required). While these steel grades contain chromium, the amount is not significant enough to provide the corrosion resistance found in stainless steel. Advantages of utilizing HR 4140 steel include:
